Yes, we do have polluted rivers.
But we still have some absolutley stunning rivers that will blow you out of the water
(no pun intended). With this, here is my personal selection of some of New Zealands most beautiful rivers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Waikato River ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Waikato River is the longest river in New Zealand, running for 425 kilometres through the North Island. It rises in the eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu, joining the Tongariro River system and flowing through Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake. It then drains Taupo at the lake's northeastern edge, creates the Huka Falls, and flows northwest through the Waikato Plains.
The mean discharge of the Waikato River is 340 cubic metres per second.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rangitata River ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Rangitata River is one of the braided rivers that helped form the Canterbury Plains in southern New Zealand. It flows southeast for 120 kilometres from the Southern Alps, entering the Pacific Ocean 30 kilometres northeast of Timaru.
The river has a catchment area of 1,773 square kilometres, and a mean annual flow of 95 cubic metres per second.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Manawatu River ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Manawatu River is a major river of the lower North Island of New Zealand. The river is unique among New Zealand rivers, starting on the east side of the main dividing range and having its outflow to the west.
The Manawatu's total length is 180 kilometres, making it only the 12th-longest in the country, but at 102 cubic metres per second it is one of the country's greatest rivers in terms of flow, and second only to the Waikato River among North Island rivers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Clutha River ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Clutha River is the second longest river in New Zealand and the longest in the South Island.
It flows south-southeast 338 kilometres through Central and South Otago from Lake Wanaka in the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean, 75 kilometres south west of Dunedin.
It is the highest volume river in New Zealand, and the swiftest, with a catchment of 21,960 square kilometres, discharging a mean flow of 614 cubic metres per second. The Clutha River is known for its scenery, gold-rush history, and swift turquoise waters.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Waitaki River ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Waitaki River is a large braided river that drains the Mackenzie Basin and runs some 110 kilometres south-east to enter the Pacific Ocean between Timaru and Oamaru on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
The median flow of the Waitaki River is 356 cubic metres per second. The river is popular for recreational fishing and jetboating.
